A prescription comes from a licensed prescriber
As of September 2026, U.S. law requires a prescription from a licensed health professional before a pharmacy can give you a prescription medicine.
U.S. prescription law · filling a prescriptionThat health professional is called the prescriber. The prescriber decides on treatment. The pharmacy fills the order. Ask for the full name and role of the person making that decision.
Your location matters
Clinicians must be allowed to practise in the place where the patient takes the visit, as checked in September 2026. That permission can come from a licence or another legal route.

An ingredient name is not the whole product name
Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), as of September 2026, has different uses with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Ozempic’s approvals concern diabetes; Wegovy includes weight management.
FDA · semaglutide product usesAsk for the ingredient and any brand name, plus whether it comes as a tablet, injection or another form. The label means the official medicine information, rather than just the sticker on the bottle. Ask whether the FDA has approved that exact product for the reason it is being prescribed to you.
