Care path

Why tests may be part of care

A lab is a place that checks a sample, often blood. Ask what a test is meant to answer.

Tests follow the assessment

As of September 2026, general federal law does not make everyone get blood tests before a prescription.

Your health review and state rules may still call for tests before you start.

Medical board guidance says doctors must do or arrange the tests needed to finish your health review, or send you to someone who can.

Monitoring means checking during care

The label for semaglutide (Wegovy) tells clinicians to check blood sugar in people with diabetes and to monitor heart rate during care.

Kidney checks are also called for when side effects could lead to fluid loss, such as bad vomiting or diarrhea.

A test list is easier to understand when each item has a reason. Ask what the result could change about your plan.

Settle the practical details

  • Can recent results be used?
  • Where can I have the test done?
  • Who explains the result to me?
  • What does the charge include?
  • What happens if the result needs more attention?

Keep a copy of your results with the rest of your care notes. Ask who receives them and how to share them with another clinician.
