Ask your plan about the exact use

Use the full product name and the reason it is prescribed. Then ask for your share of the cost.

Start with the plan’s own answer

Ask for the plan’s list of medicines it covers. That list is called a formulary. The plan may also have to approve payment before the prescription can be filled by the pharmacy. That step is called prior authorization.

Medicare’s usual prescription-drug plan may pay when a medicine treats a condition such as diabetes, rather than weight loss alone. The exact medicine must still meet your plan’s coverage and approval rules.

Medicare agency (CMS) · prescription coverage
  • Is this product covered for the reason in my prescription?
  • What records are needed for approval?
  • What would I pay at the pharmacy?
  • How long does an approval last?

Medicare has a usual rule and a separate programme

As of September 2026, medicine solely for weight loss is not covered by the usual Medicare prescription-drug plan.

CMS · usual prescription rules

A separate temporary programme offers certain weight medicines to people who qualify, under terms checked in September 2026. Their share of the bill, called a copay, is $50 each month.

CMS · Medicare GLP-1 Bridge

That programme begins in July 2026, with December 2027 as its closing month. The usual Medicare drug plan caps your spending on covered prescriptions each year. Money paid for the temporary programme does not bring you closer to that limit; it is an extra cost.

CMS · programme dates and payment terms

The government page sets out who qualifies. Ask the prescriber and plan which route applies to your situation.

A savings card has its own rules

As checked in September 2026, the branded GLP-1 savings cards for prescription copays require private health insurance. Those cards cannot be used by people covered through Medicare, Medicaid or a military plan.

Dated price record · savings-card terms

People with government coverage can use some medicine-maker cash offers by paying the price themselves. A cash offer has its own rules, separate from the savings card.

Dated price record · cash offer distinction

Ask whether a person with your coverage qualifies for the exact card or cash price. Ask what you would pay yourself.
